HOST International is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Deputy CEO Mitra Khakbaz.

Mitra was most recently an executive manager with MDA Ltd for almost 12 years and has worked in the university sector prior to that. She has a proven track record of working across areas of regional settlement, employment, community wellbeing, youth settlement, case work and intensive support services.

Mitra brings with her exceptional leadership skills and courage to act with compassion and fairness.

“I am really excited about joining the HOST team in delivering the vision of creating a better life for people experiencing displacement and supporting communities that host them,” says Mitra.

“There are over 68 million displaced people globally and I am excited to join a team that is working with local communities to identify sustainable solutions in creating safety for children, women, and men. We live at a time where our collective leadership is required to shape an inclusive, non-discriminatory society that embrace all its members to thrive and achieve their full potential.”

Mitra has worked in the human service sector since coming to Australia from Iran in 1994. She was awarded the Churchill Fellowship in 2013 which enabled her to develop a greater understanding of the global response to humanitarian needs.

Mitra has been a board director of various organisations including domestic violence services and is also a management committee member of the Immigrant Women’s Support Service and the Churchill Fellowship Association of Queensland. She was appointed to the board of NAATI in 2017 and has been co-chair of Queensland Community Alliance for the past three years.
