Local NZ eatery empowers refugees through food
HOST International NZ attended local New Zealand eatery Home Kitchen’s opening launch in Hamilton.
Home Kitchen is a new social enterprise and eatery that empowers former refugees to flourish by providing work and training and showcases the best food our diverse refugee community has to offer.
“Our vision is to create experiences where people can come together, connect over diverse dishes and learn more about what makes each of us unique,” explained Tania Jones, founder of Home Kitchen.
HOST supported Home Kitchen’s crowdfunding campaign at the end of 2018 as part of our ‘Little Things’ grants, and it was great to see them get started.
Their profits goes towards providing more employment and training opportunities through Home Kitchen and supporting other refugee-led initiatives both here and overseas. Local training initiatives includes helping refugees gain employment experience and get more involved in the Kiwi way of life.
They operate across two shares spaces, at a restaurant at Yalla Yalla Café and at a commercial kitchen at a local Age Concern centre.
